Our Motto: "Summer Is For Everyone"

Moriches Rotary Quill

(Date: 12/10/09)

Current Officers:

In Attendance:           Muriel, Janice, Barbara, Bill, Peter, Tom, Bob, Steve, Joanne, Andy, Newt, Christopher, Rich, Werner, Laura.

Guests:  Student of the month from Center Moriches High School, Jared Choi and his parents, Tom Kerr, our exchange student Kyle, with his host father, Paul.

Topics of Discussion:

  • Stuff a bus is at the king Kullen in Manorville, It is the same day as the Parade of Lights so no interact students are available. We need all hands on deck for these functions!!!

  • The next meeting is an assemble meeting - so bring your gripes or ideas.

  • January 7th meeting is 100% attendance - we will be taking pictures for and ad - Dress is Business attire. We will meet at Senix Creek Inn to give it a try.

  • A district wide stuff a bus is going to be held on February 21 by every rotary and every interact.  Way to start a wave Julia.

  • The Gift of  Life Gala was great and Bob would like to see if we can have a gala for the camp.

  • A merger of Nassau and Suffolk districts was discussed since Tom Kerr was there. Tom said that Nassau just for med to new rotary groups that satisfied the current membership requirement for a separate district but the requirements are likely to change which may ultimately result in a merger.

  • The holiday party went very well on December 5th. Keenan Dunathan (Laura's son) won the Wii and the second place prize was won by a local teacher, Tracy.

  • The Christmas baskets are not in the budget this year.  The club decided to buy 50 Hams.

  • New Business

The Board implemented a By-laws Committee - Tom , Laura and Steve are on it and He would like Kevin to be on it as well. The purpose of the committee is to determine if there is a way to extend the terms of the officers to two years and perhaps have a staggered board.  Tom Kerr suggests that we talk to other presidents and officers who have already implemented two year terms.

Bob would like to implement a "Merchant of the Month" where we honor a merchant on the same day that we honor a student of the month.  The nominations for the merchant will come from the floor. Whoever nominates a merchant must explain why. That individual will be responsible for communicating the honor to the chosen merchant.  We will vote at the assembly meetings.

Bob created a scholarship committee headed up by Muriel and Barbara to set down in writing the criteria we use to determine who receives our annual scholarships.

Newt brought in proposed new little ducks for the Duck BBQ.  The purchase was approved by the club and  if need be will go to the board for approval.

2012 is the Moriches Rotary's 75th anniversary and the Camp's 65th anniversary. We should plan something nice.  Tom Kerr suggested we contact the RI President now to put the event on the RI calendar. Tom Muriel and Bob will be heading  the committee for planning this event.

The board has decided to send a donation to Sara, Secretary of the Interact in Westhampton. The money is to be used toward her 2 week study at Boston Medical School.

Sergeants-$101. Foundation $15.

Old Business:

  • Billy Joel event is at Rock Hill on March 13th. Bob is still open to ideas to make the event great.

  • Bob would like us to contribute $100 for the year for Rotary Foundation. It is not mandatory and it would be a nice showing from the club.

  • Tom has been writing an article that will be going into the south shore press every couple of weeks. If you have news that you want in, please send it to Tom.

  • If you have made up a meeting or attended another Rotary event, please let Deborah know so she can mark you as attending a meeting.

Next Meeting:

  • Camp Pa Qua Tuck, Thursday, December 17th

  • This is an assembly meeting. Bring your ideas and suggestions. No guests. No comments about typos in the Quill!!

  • If you can’t make a meeting or you are not eating and you don’t reply to Deborah and tell her you can’t make it, you owe the club $15 for dinner. If you are coming and eating, you do not have to reply.

See you next week,

Laura for Deborah
