It was a very busy meeting as we had a guest speaker who we expected to be at the meeting Arnold Steuer from Habitat for the Humanitys and then we had guests arrive from Westhampton Rotary Thomas & Linda Kerr the District Governor Nominee with their Guest Gabriel Akok from the Sudan. He passed out paper work on his life as one of the lost Boys of the Sudan. So we gave him the floor to speak for about 10 minuets. I saw this story of the Lost boys probably on the History channel. He was 4 or 5 years old when he and the others began their journey. He traveled with his older brother. On that day North Sudan ruthlessly attacked his village, killing people. So they hid in the forest for safety. During this time they meet several thousand other children whose parents and relatives were also killed by North Sudan. They all banded together, some died of thirst and starvation or drowning. They spent 3 months wandering in the forest before they reached Ethiopia. They spent time in refugee camps. They went to school in these camps with very little equipment. It was a very wonderful story of the bravery of these children. In 2001 he was given the opportunity to immigrate to America from Kenyan Kakuma refugee camp and enrolled in an American high school and now he is a college student in America
The 50/50 was won by our guest & the 5 of Spades was picked and the game goes on only 18 card left.
The scholarship committee met at 3:30 Thursday, May 10th and picked 3 students to receive scholarships from our club. The committee was Newt, Muriel, Dale and Bob Walker. Those chosen were from the Eastport - South Mannor school.
Next Thursday the Scholarship committee will be picking scholarship winners from Center Moriches school. Again they will meet at 3:30 PM at Tavern on Main.
Don't forget this weekend will be work days at the camp. Both Saturday and Sunday our day is Sunday but you could join other clubs on Saturday. The time is 10:00 AM both days.
The date has been changed for Steve Kronmans installation. It is now June 21st. We will be honoring Tom Jeorgewitz at this meeting and making him a Paul Harris fellow. Details will follow.
The meeting on May 31st. The program will be our own Deborah Brown-Volkman. She has written a new book.
The Tangier Smith Dictionaries program distribution date might need to be changed. We will get back to you on a date.
We had the sergeants report.
The Foundation winner was our guest Linda and she is to bring the prize next week.
Our Guest Speaker was Aronold Steuer from Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. He started his career in retail clothing and after he retired he got involved in Habitat. He talked about the building of the homes and that the people that get the homes take over a mortgage of $75,000. No interest. The familles that win have to give 300 hours of work to another home. All the labor for the home is donated. Habitat has a retail store called RESTORE where they sell new items located at 2111 Lakeland Ave. Ronkonkoma. LIE exit 59 south. Phone 631-521-7789 or WWW.hfhsuffolk.org Hours are Mon to Sat 9-3, Wednesday till 6 PM All Major Credit cards are accepted. You can get a real bargain at their store. It could be kitchens or appliances. or wood or counter tops, or windows or doors etc. They are donated by construction CO like for example if they have to make a change to a home etc. So if you are building or renovating it might be a good idea to check this place out and at the same time you are helping Habitat. The families income must be between $28,000 to $45,000.00. This is a very worth while organization doing wonderful work. A very interesting program.
See you Thursday at Tavern on Main.
That's all there is...................................................Joanne
